Costs, Investment Options, and Performance of the Alaska 529 Savings Plan

Plan Costs:

T. Rowe Price has their plans priced in a very acceptable range for Section 529 savings plans. In fact, none of their investment options cost more that 1% per year, with the average cost being closer to .90%.

They do charge a $25 annual account fee, but this fee is waived if your child’s account balance is above $25,000 or your balance across all accounts is more than $75,000.

Investment Options:

There are definitely Section 529 savings plans with more investment options than the Alaska plan, but they still offer a solid group of choices comprised of well-known T. Rowe Price funds.

T. Rowe Price offers eight age-based portfolios that become more conservative as your child’s enrollment date nears. They also offer five static portfolios that remain 100% invested in a specific asset class for the life of the plan.

As with most plans, you are permitted to change your investment option once per year.

Investment Performance:

The most recent investment returns for the various options in the Alaska College Savings Plan Fund are available on T. Rowe Price’s website.
