Iowa Teacher Shortage Loan Forgiveness Program

Student Loan Forgiveness Amounts:
The Iowa teacher loan forgiveness program cancels up to 100% of a teacher's Stafford loan balance over five years.

The maximum that can be awarded in any one year is 20% of a teacher's outstanding Stafford loan balance. This amount is capped annually at the average in-state tuition rate for Idaho schools, or approximately $6,500 per year.

Eligible Schools:
A school must be designated a "shortage area" by the Department of Education.
Eligible Subject Areas:
All subject areas are eligible, but priority is given to those deemed a shortage by the Iowa Department of Education.

Guidance counselors and principals are not eligible for this loan forgiveness program.

Application Deadlines and Rules for Iowa Loan Forgiveness for Teachers:
  • Applications must be received by September 30th of each year.
  • Award notifications are made by January 31st of each year.
  • Must be employed full-time as a credentialed teacher for at least one year.
  • Applications may be submitted online.
  • A school administrator must verify your employment.
