Definition: The American Graduation Initiative is a program outlined by President Obama to help increase the number of Americans enrolling and graduating from college. It is currently only a proposed program and is unclear if the goals will be met through existing proposed legislation, or through a separate American Graduation Initiative bill.
The primary goals of the American Graduation Initiative are to:
- Increase the number of community college graduates by 5 million people, by 2020.
- Create a community college "challenge" program that provides matching grants for successful community college programs.
- Promote non-traditional college completion methods.
- Modernize community college facilities.
- Create an online skills improvement program to help students ready themselves for college and career opportunities.
