According to a Fox News report that aired yesterday, the financial crisis is taking a massive toll on the bottom lines of state college programs. To compensate for this, aided by steady demand for enrollment slots, many states are actively pursuing larger than usual tuition increases for the coming academic year.

According to the report, the state of New York has already approved a 14% increase for tuition at its state schools. Following suit, California is considering a tuition increase in the ballpark of 10%. There's no doubt that other states will not be far behind.

How does all this affect parents?

The biggest and most immediate result of these rising tuition costs will be increased applications for the most common Federal financial aid programs. Of course, with more students fighting over limited resources, the spoils will go to families who get their FAFSA application in as soon as possible.
